Radiohead drum technician killed in stage collapse

The band’s drum tech, 33-year old Scott Johnson, lost his life setting up a Radiohead gig in Canada on Saturday.

Johnson, from Doncaster UK, was killed when scaffolding from Radiohead’s stage collapsed at around 4pm Saturday (June 16, 2012) just hours before the audience was to be let in for the Toronto show.

The concert was cancelled as soon as the death became known. It was to have been the final date on an 11-show tour of North America for Radiohead.

The accident also injured three others, one seriously. The 45-year old man was taken to nearby Sunnybrook hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The two other men received minor injuries.

40,000 fans would have attended the outdoor concert.

Radiohead posted the following statement at their website:

“We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend and colleague. He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny; a highly skilled and valued member of our great road crew. We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott’s family and all those close to him.”
