Lady Gaga’s new album Born This Way is No. 1 on the Aussie charts

Pop sensation Lady Gaga, who will be returning to Australia for a one-off concert this July, has debuted at number one on the ARIA albums chart with her latest offering Born This Way.

The much-anticipated album, released on May 23, is already approaching multi-platinum status in Australia and has reportedly sold more than a million copies worldwide.

Gaga shot to the top spot just hours after announcing that she will return to Sydney for an intimate performance for fewer than 1000 of her diehard fans on July 13.

Although the flying visit has been arranged to promote the US singer’s new album, it seems Gaga needs little help.

She managed to end Adele’s lengthy reign over the national albums chart with 21, pushing her down to second spot.

The much-loved UK singer, who was this week named the most powerful person in British music, is one of three females dominating the top of the albums list.

Jessie J‘s Who You Are sits at number four just behind Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours,which fell back one place to number three.

Fresh from a sell-out Australian tour, James Blunt’s Some Kind of Trouble has peaked at number five, after 24 weeks on the chart.

LMFAO continue their strong run on the singles front, leading the pack at number one for the seventh week in a row.

Both the ARIA singles and country charts otherwise remained largely unchanged.

Musicmetric opens up a world of music data as it launches API

Professional music analytics service Musicmetric announced on Friday that it is to open its API to developers, allowing third-parties to utilise musical sentiment data that it has harvested over the past two years.

The API will offer access to artist trend data, the company’s text sentiment analyser, artist fan demographics, fan geo-location and also how their brand is being discussed on the web using Web Buzz data. For example, developers will be able to pull artist-based data for the top 1000 artists using simple calls with the API.

With this data, developers will be able to create their own applications or services that can give feedback to bands, artists or record labels within their existing platforms.

Musicmetric is a UK-based startup that offers a varied range of tools to help those associated with the music industry better understand consumer behaviour and opinion around their music or their brand. Its proprietary technology trawls data from P2P networks, reviews, comments and opinions from millions of sources across websites, blogs and social networks, displaying it in interactive charts and tables within a customer’s Musicmetric dashboard – all of which adds to data already mined from radio and direct music sales.

The company is also looking to expand the datasets offered via its API; providing developers with access to data related to how music is being consumed via Bittorrent networks (notifying them of how many times an artist’s music has been illegally downloaded), looking into how individual tracks are perceived by fans, and also a look how at music track’s download activity differs depending on geographic location.

Developers can get an idea of what they will be able to create using the API by visiting Musicmetric’s developer portal.

Dee Snider does Broadway

Dee Snider of Twisted Sister has Broadway running in his blood. Along with an eleven-week run on the Great White Way in Rock of Ages, he has announced that he is making an album of Broadway standards.

Dee Does Broadway will be released in September on Razor and Tie. While there is no information on the song list, he did Tweet “Just finished recording two more vocals for my ‘Dee Does Broadway’ record. Six down, four more tracks to go. Back in studio tomorrow.”

In an interview with MTV News, Snider talked about the difference between performing in arenas and on Broadway. “The biggest difference between a concert situation and a theater situation is that you can’t curse out the audience.

I’m used to addressing situations. If something is going on in the house that I don’t like at a concert, or if the audience is not energised or enthusiastic … or if they’re particularly energized and enthusiastic … I will stop a song just to comment on what’s going on. I quickly realised that was unacceptable on Broadway. I just have to stay in character and stay in the show.”
